Things to Do Outdoors in Perthshire

BOOK OUR PRVATE VICTORIAN ESTATE AND VISIT DUNKELD

You don’t have to go far from the house to keep busy. The River Tay runs close by and is well known for salmon fishing, with ghillies available if you want a fantastic day on/in the water. Fields and moorland around Perthshire are used for shooting and stalking in season, with local estates arranging days out. For something higher pace there are quadbiking centres within half an hour, or plenty of marked walking trails if you’d rather keep to your own pace — from short riverside paths to longer hikes in the hills. Whether it’s rods, guns, boots or engines, there’s a way to get outdoors from Dungarthill.

Golf Holiday in Scotland

If golf is on the agenda, Dungarthill is well placed. There are ten courses within half an hour, including Dunkeld & Birnam just ten minutes down the road and Pitlochry with its dramatic hill views. Gleneagles is under 45 minutes if you want a championship round, and St Andrews — the home of golf — is about an hour and a quarter, an easy day trip. With so many options close by, it works well for golfing groups who want space at the house as well as courses to play. We are able to offer complimentary rounds of golf at Dunkeld and Birnam, please let us know if you are interested.

Exhilaration Nearby

If part of your group is after more than walks and golf, there are plenty of ways to get the adrenaline up.

  • Canyoning (Bruar) – A 30-minute drive gets you into Bruar Canyon with The Canyoning Company. Guests at Dungarthill can get 15% off — just ask us before you book.

  • Highland Offroad (Dunkeld) – Guided quad treks and 4WD experiences right on the edge of town, with routes for different ages and abilities.

  • Highland Safaris (Aberfeldy) – About 40 minutes away; mix of off-road safaris, bike hire, red deer encounters and gold panning, so it works for the whole family.

  • Nae Limits (Ballinluig) – Around 15 miles from the house and set up for full-on adventure days: white-water rafting, canyoning, paintball, clay shooting and more.

More Walks than you can ever do

There’s no shortage of good walks close to the house, from short riverside paths to full days in the hills. Around Dunkeld you’ve got gentle routes like the Hermitage or the Inver Path, both easy enough for families. A little further out are climbs with bigger views: Birnam Hill gives a rewarding panorama back over Dunkeld and the Tay, and Schiehallion, one of Scotland’s best-known Munros, is about an hour’s drive for a longer day on the hill. Walkhighlands has maps and routes for all grades, so it’s easy to match the day to the group.

Fishing

The River Tay runs less than a mile from the house and is one of the world’s best-known salmon rivers. Several famous beats are nearby, many offering fishing by the week or for shorter sessions, and we can help put you in touch with local ghillies if you’d like guidance on the water. Beyond salmon, there’s also trout fishing on lochs in the area, giving options for different seasons and skill levels. Get in touch ahead of your stay if fishing is on the agenda and we can point you in the right direction.

Foraging and Tasting

A local forager runs guided tours and can add a lunch built around what’s in season nearby. For whisky, tastings can be arranged at the house through Taste Talk or Aberfeldy Distillery. And if you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else, we have catering contacts who can handle meals at Dungarthill. Tell us what you’re after before your stay and we’ll sort it.

Shooting and stalking

For guests interested in country sports, there’s a wide range close to the house. County Clays at Dunkeld Park Estate is less than four miles away and is the largest clay pigeon range in Scotland — a good option for beginners as well as more experienced shots, with other activities on site too. Gleneagles also runs clay shooting if you’re heading that way. On neighbouring estates there are opportunities for grouse and pheasant days in season, and for deer stalking. Roe and fallow deer are often seen in the grounds at Dungarthill, and we can put you in touch with local sporting agents to arrange outings.
